Jo-Ann Team Members Donate More Than 3,500 Hours During National Volunteer Week

05/02/2013

Over 575 Team Members volunteered at more than 30 organizations

HUDSON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, the leading fabric and craft specialty retailer in America, celebrated National Volunteer Week April 21 through 27 by giving back to the communities it calls home.

In partnership with BVU: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, Jo-Ann expanded upon its 2012 program to include Team Members from its three Distribution Centers. With the support of the Distribution Centers, which are located in Hudson, Ohio; Opelika, Ala.; and Visalia, Calif., Jo-Ann was able to increase the number of volunteer hours donated from 2,529 in 2012 to more than 3,500 in 2013 – an increase of more than 38 percent.

“We are thrilled with the difference our Team Members were able to make during our expanded National Volunteer Week activities; their thoughtful generosity is an inspiration,” said Tom Williams, senior vice president, human resources, at Jo-Ann. “The feedback from the nonprofit organizations and our Team Members has been so positive that we have decided to hold a second Jo-Ann Volunteer Week in September of this year. On behalf of Jo-Ann, I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to BVU for their assistance in coordinating the week’s activities.”

Team Members from the Jo-Ann Stores corporate office in Hudson, Ohio, and three Distribution Centers around the country took advantage of a volunteerism program which allowed them to donate time during their work week – up to eight hours each. This is the second year of the program at the corporate office and the first time it has taken place at the Distribution Centers.

“Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has become a champion in community engagement throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond,” said Brian Broadbent, BVU’s President & CEO. “BVU values our partnership with Jo-Ann as we assist in identifying community needs and their volunteers are willing to roll up their sleeves to help. We thank Jo-Ann for providing an opportunity for their employees to give back.”

Accomplishments of Jo-Ann Team Members during National Volunteer Week include:

  • Sorting 24,500 lbs. of donations for Harvest for Hunger at the Akron – Canton Regional Foodbank
  • Adapting 105 toys for children with disabilities through Replay for Kids
  • Cutting, sewing and stuffing over 600 Comfort Bears for area children’s hospitals and shelters
