"I am proud of the work our customers and Team Members do to benefit others."

HUDSON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, the leading fabric and craft specialty retailer in America, increased charitable giving to non-profit organizations in 2011 from approximately $1.9 million in 2010 to more than $3.3 million in cash and in-kind donations.

“Since 1943, the Jo-Ann Stores family has made a commitment to serve our communities and be the best fabric and craft retail brand for them,” said Travis Smith, chief executive officer and president of Jo-Ann Stores. “I am proud of the work our customers and Team Members do to benefit others.”

A wide range of organizations benefitted from donations made by Jo-Ann Stores in 2011 including Goodwill Industries International, Inc., the American Heart Association (AHA), Kids in Need Foundation, and schools across the country.

Customers and Team Members contributed to the more than $135,000 donated to the AHA. Jo-Ann customers across the country participated in the in-store coin box donation program while Team Members took part in AHA Start! Heart Walk campaigns in Akron and Cleveland, Ohio, to raise money for the organization whose mission is to build healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.

Education remained a primary focus of the Jo-Ann Stores corporate giving program in 2011. The Kids in Need Foundation was the recipient of a $25,000 grant, and the foundation’s resource centers were given product donations throughout the year.

The Inspired to Help program, granting new Jo-Ann stores the opportunity to make a donation of $2,000 to a local school and each of the three Jo-Ann distribution centers to donate $3,000 quarterly, contributed $98,000 to many worthy schools and organizations in the first year of its existence.

“We are excited about the positive contributions we can make in 2012 as we continue to build upon our community involvement initiatives,” added Smith.
